Today I met Paul at Espresso Metro and he drew in my notebook with my pencil. Posted by Picasa

This is a cartoon book by James Hamaker, one of Paul's students. Another student (unnamed) did the cover. The cartoons are offbeat and hilarious; it's hard to believe that James is mildly autistic. Posted by Picasa
This is the first two pages of the book. Posted by Picasa

Today I ran into Paul at Espresso Metro! He showed me a folder full of cartoons from the last several years... about a hundred of them. Very funny stuff. Posted by Picasa

Just who is Paul Basye?

He's a talented cartoonist, bass player, and teacher living in Sacramento, California. If you're like me, you may have trouble with names. Here's a great way to remember Paul's. He looks like an aging British rock star (not one in particular — generically). Paul McCartney is an aging British rock star, who happens to play bass. Paul — bass — Basye. If you need another image, Basye is pronounced like Count Basie, another musician.
Paul will be appearing this weekend at Luna's, playing bass behind a poetry reading.
You can see Paul's cartoons in Alive and Kicking, available free all over Sacramento.
